5:45 minutes into the song Kalachuchi by Munimuni marks the arrival of crazy metal drum fills into the realm of indie-folk music. The charm of quiet vocals and acoustic guitars have, stylistically at least, defined most indie music since its advent in the 10s. But this drum solo, the kind that one usually hears only in heavy-handed rock tracks, somehow made its way into this seemingly adorable folkish song. This will, from now on, be an addition to indie music's sonic palette. One that they didn't have before: The ability to sound massive.
Bottom line, I just think it's really commendable that bands like Munimuni immerse in such experiments in music making that they have, inadvertently or otherwise, found a new sound. Isn't that the dream?
